I recently joined SQPN Connect and looked around to make some friends on the SQPN version of Facebook. I did a search for other people in CT and found a gentleman by the name of Thomas J.

Tom supports an excellent not-for-profit movement by the United Church of Christ to support some of the most important people in our armed forces in a very important way.

Holy Joe’s Cafe is a ministry/apostolate that sends coffee to the Chaplains that support our military forces. Chaplains are the shepherds for God’s flock when and where they are most needed, in the loneliness and isolation of deployment in battle.

Sending Coffee to the Chaplains gives them a “taste of home” so-to-speak and c’mon, who can deny the importance of coffee in getting the day started.

This is a wonderful way to support our Chaplains and troops, and it is something so simple and something that we all take for granted. We wake up, and brew a pot of our favorite coffee. However, the Chaplains supporting our troops don’t have that luxury. They are stuck with whatever coffee the military can provide, and trust me when I say, it probably isn’t all that good.

If you can’t directly support Holy Joe’s Cafe, you may want to help spread the word on your parish bulletin board or at your local community center.

Holy Joe’s Cafe has a great flier you can download from here.

So support our Chaplains and our troops, by sending them one of the most precious and important resources we have…coffee.

Mint Chocolate Espresso Martinis

On Sunday I decided to make Mint Chocolate Espresso Martinis. I took a recipe from http://www.pawineandspirits.com/HolidayRecipes.html

Cappuccino Martini

2 oz. Pinnacle Double Espresso Vodka

2 oz. Ryan’s Cappuccino Cream

I included the first ingredient, but used Bailey’s Mint Chocolate Irish Cream in place of the second. We both really liked it.   It had a little bit of a burn from the vodka, but it was very delicious.   It is a drink for coffee people.

Beer Stats:

Brewery: Southern Tier Brewing Co. Lakewood, NY

Bottle Size: 12oz
Label Description: Yellow-ringed orange sun in the middle, with blue and orange diagonal stripes behind the beer name.

My Review:

Tanya and I love our local package store. They do wine and beer tastings, have a huge variety of both beverages and best of all, they let you mix and match your own six pack, so you can try something new without committing to it. We don’t go there often but, when we do, there is always something new to try.

One of the items I picked this time was a beer from the Southern Tier Brewing Company called Hop Sun: Southern Wheat Brew. Tanya actually tried a sip before me and said she thought it tasted “wheaty”. The beer definitely has a very aromatic, sweet wheat smell to it. However, what I taste more are the hops.

When the beer first hits your tongue, you get a brief hint of a wheat flavor. However the main/middle part of the experience is the somewhat bitter taste of hops. It isn’t as strong as a pale ale but, has a pretty good kick to it. Once the hops subside a bit, you again pick up the sweet wheat flavor, if only as an after taste.

This is a good beer for people who prefer a stronger flavor and something with a kick.
