Listening to Linus

Some days I can give Linus (our son) exactly what he wants and he is so happy.   Then there are other days, like today, where no matter how much I feed or hold him he keeps crying.   I decided to put him in his bouncy chair and he is finally calm.   I hate hearing him cry so much, but at night he gets fussy.   Chris is at work and misses most of the fun I endure during the evenings.   I am glad he is finally peaceful.

As you may or may not know, I am a geek. I work for a tri-state area ISP as a lead technical support technician. Basically, this means that I assist the technical support reps and also take the super angry calls.

Anyway, a while back, a friend at work Rick mentioned this web comic to me called User Friendly. It is about a small ISP and the people who work there. Everything from an evil-genius-in-training coder to a technologically inept marketing guy. Their interactions with each other and their clients/customers makes for one of the longest-running, most amusing web comics on teh internets.

I have read all the way from the first comic in 1997 and am up to May 2005. There is a strip for every day, or there-abouts and I guarantee that you will be hooked the moment you start reading it.

Oh, did I mention that there is a server-made dust ball with feet that is alive and coded an AI called Erwin? Yeah, forgot that part…

Go to the address in the graphic below and enjoy…I will also put a link in the links section…once I have one…

A while back, I used to listen to a lot of podcasts. There were generally 2 types I subscribed to. Tech podcasts that keep me up to date on the latest geek trends, and faith podcasts to help sustain my faith and to help me learn new things about the Church.

In January I built a new computer, and up until now, I had not downloaded any new podcasts, or even plugged in my Ipod. Today, I finally got around to doing it.

I was able to migrate my playlists and music over from my old hard drive. (Details will be in a future technology post) I knew that some of the podcasts I used to listen to were gone, such as the Rosary Army Catholic podcast. However, I was pleased to find that Sirius/XM’s The Catholic Channel are now providing a Catholics Next Door podcast, which I quickly subscribed to.

I was able to listen to that and part of an episode of Catholic Family on the way to work. It was like I never stopped listening. The voices, the families the stories and the content, all waiting there like a good friend you haven’t spoken to in a long time.

I can’t wait to see what else there is to listen to, and to catch up with the lives of my favorite podcasters! It also makes me look forward to when Tanya and I will start podcasting again in the near future.

My Review:

Tanya and I love our local package store. They do wine and beer tastings, have a huge variety of both beverages and best of all, they let you mix and match your own six pack, so you can try something new without committing to it. We don’t go there often but, when we do, there is always something new to try.

One of the items I picked this time was a beer from the Southern Tier Brewing Company called Hop Sun: Southern Wheat Brew. Tanya actually tried a sip before me and said she thought it tasted “wheaty”. The beer definitely has a very aromatic, sweet wheat smell to it. However, what I taste more are the hops.

When the beer first hits your tongue, you get a brief hint of a wheat flavor. However the main/middle part of the experience is the somewhat bitter taste of hops. It isn’t as strong as a pale ale but, has a pretty good kick to it. Once the hops subside a bit, you again pick up the sweet wheat flavor, if only as an after taste.

This is a good beer for people who prefer a stronger flavor and something with a kick.
